Becoming a virtual assistant (VA) was one of the best decisions I've ever made. I love being able to organise my work around my life, rather than the other way around. If you're wondering how I succeeded in this field, here is my journey and answers to some of the most frequently asked questions.
How long have you been a virtual assistant?
I started my VA business in 2019, so it's been nearly five years now. In Switzerland, few people understand what a virtual assistant does, making it difficult to communicate about the job, especially since there are so many titles for this profession: freelance assistant, digital assistant, independent assistant, independent secretary, etc.
Is your business really successful?
This question comes up often, perhaps because the concept of a virtual assistant is still relatively unknown here. Yes, my business is doing very well. For 5 years, I have been helping companies, freelancers, and individuals to create, manage, and develop their activities - I would simply not be here if it didn't work.
What did you do before becoming a virtual assistant?
Before embarking on this journey, I worked as an administrative assistant, personal assistant, and executive assistant. These roles helped me develop the necessary skills to excel as a VA.
What did you study?
Nothing related to admin :) I studied graphic design in Geneva, which helped me develop an artistic sensitivity and technical skills valuable in my current profession.
Why did you want to become a virtual assistant?
I wanted more flexibility and freedom. Even though I enjoyed my jobs as an employee, I sometimes felt my work was undervalued. As a VA, the relationship with clients is different: they genuinely appreciate your work because they understand the time and effort it requires. This recognition is extremely rewarding.
When and how did you make the professional transition?
The transition wasn't easy. In 2019, I didn't even know VAs existed. I just wanted a better work-life balance. So, I spent six months preparing for this transition: creating my business, defining my services, saving money, etc. Leaving my job was scary, but it was necessary to achieve my goals.
What do you love about being a virtual assistant?
There are so many things I love about this job. I enjoy my clients and the various projects I work on. I love being able to take long walks in the afternoon with my dog, organize my schedule according to my needs, and not having to ask for permission to take vacations. Not feeling guilty about stopping work if I fall ill is also a huge relief. And, of course, having an early oen Fridays is a real treat.
